It’s not an easy thing, to look into the future to attempt to divine what the heck is going on. You’ve got a lot of moving parts, a lot of things that are influenced by the actions, choices, and decisions of a whole lot of other people, some of whom won’t know what they’re doing until about five minutes after they’ve done the deed! The future is always in flux…
Imagine the flow of time and events like threads on a loom.
The ever present current moment is the thread on the shuttle, moving back and forth between the threads of the loom. That is your focus, right there, that current moment, weaving in and out through the threads, building the tapestry of your life one skipped thread at a time. And it’s only when you look back that you can see the picture, the tapestry is only seen in full after it’s finished, not while it’s in progress. Look ahead, and you see the threads of the loom, stretching ahead into the future, the image only existing in potential, and still capable of being influenced by decisions made in the current moment, at the shuttle as it weaves through.
You can predict what the final image might look like, if you know enough of the factors feeding into the current moment.
Forecasting the future requires that you know where you are right now. That’s why you need the significator card. That’s you, in your current situation. The farther forward in time you move from your fixed, known point, the more uncertain the forecast becomes.
Let me tell you a truth: anyone who says they can tell you with certainty what’s going to happen a year from now, or five years from now, is blowing smoke up your rear end. That or they need to show you their winning lottery tickets. From your single moment in time you can predict with pretty good accuracy what’s going to happen next month, or even three months out. But towards the end of the Wheel of the Year reading, we’re talking in terms of tendencies and possibilities, not certainties.

In a Tarot deck there are 78 cards, that can be read upright or reversed. Each card is an entire universe of knowledge and possibility, in the right hands. Maintaining a strict one card per month format pushes the reader into accepting the formless possibilities the future holds. Getting too caught up in the idea that now that you have a future forecast means you know exactly what’s going to happen can remove your ability to respond to rapidly changing circumstances, and can actually prevent your pretty tapestry from taking shape.

I also use the passage of the Zodiac around the calendar to guide the reading, so dates are a little bit subject to change.
